Big-budget Productions May Not Always Lead to Great Success
While many TV producers in China today are keen to make big-budget phenomenal TV series, insiders suggested they should think twice before deciding what subject to shoot.
Celebrated directors, producers and screenwriters of TV series exchanged their views on TV series pre-production at Magnolia TV Forum of the 21st Shanghai TV Festival. The forum was themed on survival manual for Chinese and foreign urban TV series.
Screenwriter Wang Yuan said that our domestic TV drama production is still lagging behind foreign counterparts in stunts and story-telling skills. "TV dramas tackling real-life issues in big cities of China is a good alternative. " Wang said.
Well-known TV series director Liu Jiang, whose credits include a spy drama called Before Dawn, said that directors and producers should place the highest priority on audience demands. "Domestic directors should improve their skills in telling fun and compelling series." Liu added.
Chinese urban TV series today cover varied subjects, like family issues, romance and moral dilemmas. This kind of genre is becoming increasingly popular among the generation of young city-dwellers, who want to see these realistic stories that are close and relevant to their own lives.
The secret to the success for these series, according to the veterans of this industry, is the ingenious setting of characters, human relationships and conflict of dramaturgy.
