New Trends in Film and TV Market

This year’s International Film and TV Market featured the largest number of exhibitors in history who brought new programs as well as TV dramas of various genres, including war themed drama, period drama, urban and family drama.

A growing trend of this year’s market is the IP dramas. IP refers to intellectual property, and the IP dramas are those adapted from web novels rather than published books.

Since 2014, the film and TV copyrights of more than 100 web novels have been bought, and a majority of these web novels are produced into TV dramas.

The competition for purchasing intellectual property of hit novels is intense, which also brings about a significant pay raise for web novel authors.

The web novels that are popular and have a fan base online bring fewer worries of ratings to the production companies when young pop stars join the cast.

The Journey of Flowers is a TV drama produced by Ciwen Media and adapted from an online novel written by Guoguo. The success of this novel has already gained the public’s attention and loyal fans, and in addition to the TV series production, there’s also going to be game, film, stage and other cross-industry developments.

The film and TV market also sees an increasing number of period dramas, especially mega productions like the 1,000-epsiode Chinese Idiom Stories. The TV series are also getting longer, as the number of episodes of many major productions has increased from around 50 to 70.
