20th Shanghai TV Festival General Information

The 20th Shanghai TV Festival will be held June 9 to 13 this year. Started in 1986, STVF has made a significant contribution to the development of China\'s television industry by building a dazzling showcase platform and opening a window to international cooperation and communication. Over the past two decades STVF has grown into a first-class integrated platform that recognizes and promotes television excellence.

This year STVF includes four major activities: TV program awards, film and TV market, technology market and forum. Its four major special events are: the Magnolia Awards Ceremony, the People’s Choice Awards, Shanghai Student TV Festival and TV Program Showcase. This 5-day TV festival will fully display a new, charming and vigorous television industry for the multi-media era. 

I. Major Events

1. Insider Experts in Charge of Film Paneling

The Magnolia Award, STVF’s international TV program competition, is the festival\'s oldest award and is recognized for its professionalism and fairness. Over 1,000 programs from more than 50 countries and regions have enrolled in this year’s contest. According to the entries\' diverse styles and various subjects, the overall competition is divided into four units: TV movies, TV series, Documentary, and Animation. These are assessed by 16 judges, including Guo Baochang, the well-known director, Chris Macdonald, Chairman of Hot Docs, and Nelson Shin, the famous animation producer and director. They are respectively in charge of different activities, including the short listing of 10 TV series, 10 TV films, 22 documentaries, and 12 animations. (Name list of entries and jury panel is enclosed).

2. Hot Spot Focus on the Forum

Aiming to be the bellwether of Chinese TV industry development, the Magnolia International TV Forum will bring hot topics and elite guests to the stage in front of eminent guests and festival patrons. It has invited media industry leaders from both home and abroad to take the pulse of the Chinese TV industry, and to share candid opinions on future media industry trends. Popular issues will be discussed, including the road taken by locally-made Chinese programs, the popularity of online series, the future for romantic dramas and the innovation pursued in Chinese documentaries. The forum complies with STVF\'s responsibilities to pursue the development of China\'s TV industry.  

3. Two international and professional markets

By mid-April, the TV program trading market - the TV sections of the International Film and TV Market, International New Media, and Broadcasting Equipment Market - was basically sold out. The leading domestic and overseas film and television production and technology companies involved are listed. As the only professional animation pitch platform in Asia, the seventh Asian Animation Pitch & Catch will be held simultaneously. This animation marketplace has been remarkably successful in opening opportunities for pitch projects, attracting valid buyers, and developing derivative products. It has supported many Chinese original animations in gaining world-wide attention.

4. A grand award ceremony

With its consistent form in combining the Magnolia Awards with new program promotion, the festival will review the year\'s grand achievements in domestic and overseas TV program production. In the new TV program promotion session, crews of a dozen new and upcoming shows will be presented. In the glamorous, star-studded Closing & Awards Ceremony, industry peer awards and the people’s choice awards will be announced.  

Ⅱ.  Three Major Developments 

1. Merger of Film and TV Market

With the increasingly close links developing between the TV and film industries, STVF and Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) will officially announce a merger this year. This will be concurrently celebrated by the two organizations at Shanghai Exhibition Center. The outcome will result in building a bigger and better platform for exhibitors in China and overseas by offering an “International Film & TV Market”. The market this year will form a complete chain covering the screening, trade, post production, new media, investment and financing, and legal services arms of the industry. It will continue to strengthen its functions in showcasing product and promoting exchanges, deals and collaboration, and further apply its power to generate resources and boost the industry to promote extensive and diverse cooperation.

2. Film Selection Innovation

STVF\'s method of choosing winners of the Magnolia Award for TV Series is the first of its kind in China. During both the preliminary and final selections, we work with Deloitte, one of the world\'s four major accounting firms. This year we have invited 50 people from around the country to be involved in the candidate selection process. They include leading directors and playwrights, like Zheng Xiaoloong and Gao Mantang, as well as other TV industry elites representing various platforms and perspectives, such as academia, reviewers and the TV stations. All selectors, in proportion and together with the ultimate jury, will determine the prize winners this year. The adapted awards\' procedure demonstrates STVF\'s professional approach to maintaining the principles of openness and fairness and continually improving the evaluation mechanism to achieve the highest possible standards.

3. Interaction with Public 

In order to get more people involved and increase its public participation and influence, the 20th STVF will also provide a series of special other activities. Among them, the People’s Choice Awards, focusing on citizens’ perspectives, especially young people, moves into its second year of online voting.

Also, STVF has carefully selected 80 popular premium series and episodes to provide audiences with a visual feast during the festival through an exclusive one-time broadcast on the Drama Channel, Shanghai Art Channel, DocuChina Channel, International Channel Shanghai and Toonmax Cartoon Channel. 

The Shanghai Students’ Television Festival, initiated by Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts in collaboration with 50 other universities in China, moves into its 7th year. This year, it will invite international experts to join the jury panel.

STVF has become recognized as a first class, multi-platform for television program exchange in Asia in terms of scale, authority, popularity and its close links to the traditional media industry. Its ongoing development can’t be achieved without support from all sectors of society, especially its media friends. Thank you for all your help.
