Festival Dares Artists to Keep It Short for One-minute Movie Competition

The competition has become a worldwide platform for short films lasting one-minute.

The One-Minute Film Competition was kicked off yesterday at 2016 Shanghai International Film and TV Festival.

The competition, which started in the Netherlands in 1998, has become a worldwide platform for short films lasting one-minute.

Julia van Mourik, chairman of the "World One-Minute Film" competition, said that anything is possible within one minute.

"It is also very challenging for artists as they have to tell a story within a limited time," said Mourik.

The festival also held a forum yesterday about how to integrate realism and artistry into the development of a one-minute film with an "urban image of the times" theme.

East China Normal University Professor Wei Shaonong supported the one-minute movie concept as a valuable experience for students to discover, display and reflect on their thoughts and emotions through images.

Art critic Lin Mingjie said the short film art form is now accessible to many more people who can easily use their cell phones to make a movie.

"We need more in-depth and original works which can really inspire people," said Lin.
