【Film and TV market】Network dramas, big data and HD programs are stand out exhibits

The Film and TV market drew public attention
High-definition programs, big data analysis and weekly broadcast network dramas came into sharp focus at the newly-merged International Film and TV Market which opened yesterday at Shanghai Exhibition Center.
In the important aspects of content and topic, producers focused strongly on the daily lives of normal people as well as perennially popular themes such as World War II and costume dramas.
Ultra-high definition (UHD) and three-dimension (3D) technologies attracted visitors\' attention as usual, despite them not being available to most Chinese families.
South Korean exhibitors presented 3D programs mainly about wonders of nature, such as Amazing Asia 3D and Mountain World Trekking. An LG UHD TV played 4K programs in the market\'s South Korea Pavilion.
China Central Television (CCTV) has established a database of 1.6 million hours of programs in standard, 3D and 4K formats. As Asia\'s biggest TV program data center, CCTV\'s audio-visual archive offers content and services to local and overseas TV stations and online video websites.
The center also provides digitalized versions to make it easy for local stations to access legacy video content and apply data analysis. CCTV is unique in offering such services nationwide, archive staff said at the CCTV booth.
Big data, one of the hottest technologies, is being used in TV and film markets, exhibitors said.
"Big data, or data analysis, is relevant to the whole industry chain, from choices of director, plot and actors to video websites," said Liang Dong, Croton\'s data center director.
Croton\'s analysis, based on a database of 6,000 TV dramas and about 20 Shanghai-based experts with 10 years or more industry experience, helps firms to improve audience ratings and click rates on websites, and therefore to increase revenue.
South Korea-based SBS, developer of the popular title You Come from the Stars, exhibited new dramas like Dr Stranger which will be broadcast on Youku, China\'s No. 1 online video website.
As well as introducing high-quality dramas, Youku has invested heavily and cooperated with producers to make its own TV dramas. By the first quarter of next year it will be broadcasting 17 self-made programs each week.
TV programs at the fair focused more on the daily lives of normal people instead of the traditional emperor and espionage themes of several years ago.
They targeted marriage (Good Wife 101 and Prenuptial Agreement), parenting (He and His Sons) and the aged (Sun Lao Stubborn).
World War II themes were also popular with titles such as 70th Anniversary of War Ending 2015. Others included Fire Blue Blade and Zhang Zhizhong, named after the famous Chinese general in the war against Japan.
