The 18th Shanghai Television Festival opened last night at Shanghai Culture Square with a grand ceremony.

The gala event, enhanced by the latest in high-tech broadcasting equipment, looked back on the past year of rapid development in China\'s TV industry.

Pan Qianqian, who won the third season of "China\'s Got Talent," stunned the audience with a popular TV drama theme song "Borrowing Another Five Hundred Years From Heaven."

Comedy star Chen Peisi presented a hilarious crosstalk show with noted local TV host Cao Kefan while famous singer Fei Yu-ching performed the romantic song "A Thousand Miles Away."

In addition to light-hearted performances, the gala also featured Xu Xianqin singing "Mom Is the Best." Xu, an ordinary village woman, has devoted eight years to helping more than 200 deaf children learn to speak. Many people were moved to tears after learning of the unsung heroine’s touching stories.

Armless pianist Liu Wei, winner of the first season of "China\'s Got Talent," also amazed audiences with his new interpretation of the classic melody "The Butterfly Lovers."

The 18th Shanghai Television Festival will run until Friday, featuring diverse events such as the Magnolia Awards for International Television Production, an International Film and TV Market, Asian Animation Pitch and Catch, and Magnolia TV Forum.

During the event, local TV fans can watch acclaimed festival TV films, documentaries and animated series on local channels and take part in the Audience Choice Award for their favorite actor, actress, director and TV drama.
