US 30million for 14 TV Series, Documentaries and Animations

Business has boomed since the start of the International Film and TV Market of Shanghai TV Festival. Even though we are still in the grasp of an on-going global financial crisis, few exhibitors show signs of weakening enthusiasm. Instead, they have been actively engaged in business dealings and negotiations. Daily News has just received word that China International Television Corporation has just closed on a US$30 million contract with EDB Singapore and NL at the fair. They will join their efforts in making 5 TV series, 7 documentaries and 2 animations.

In an interview with the general manager of China Radio, Film & Television Programs Exchange Center, general manager of TVPMD of China International Television Corporation Mr. Ma Runsheng expressed his great gratification with the rich harvest they\'ve reaped this year at the festival.

Ma told the reporter that the agreement calls for EDB Singapore to pay the China International TV Corporation US$30 million for a set number of stories and ideas. The two sides are thinking of establishing a long-term business relationship based on four guiding principles: making use of respective advantages, sharing interests in subjects, cooperating with one another home and abroad, and sharing international marketing.

What kind of subject matters appeals to both sides? Ma revealed that the first program to be produced under the contract would be the full-length epic TV series Life in Nanyang, adapted from the novel Life in Nanyang wirritern by Yang Jinyuan, telling a story of how Chinese people from Guangdong and Fujian Provinces, strived for a new life in Nanyang (now Singapore and Malaysia) during the Late Qing Dynasty. This TV series will span centuries, from the Late Qing Dynasty to the contemporary era, and aims to show off the undaunted and pioneering spirits of the Chinese daughters and sons.

However, what the Singaporean side is also taking a large interest in Chinese action movies. Accordingly, Lady General Hua Mulan, Dragon Inn and IP Man will likely be part of the agreement as well. As for the documentary subjects, the Singaporean party is keen on traditional parts of Chinese history such as the Silk Road and Chinese chinaware. The Legend of Bruce Lee and Stories of the Twelve Animals are the initial plans for animation category.

Speaking about the forthcoming cooperation, Ma was overwhelmed by excitement: “This foundation will not only promote the cultural development of the two countries, but it will also help to further carry forward Chinese culture. This time, in addition to the US$30 million contract, we also received big orders totalling US $ 1 million placed by Japan and countries in Southeast Asia TV series like A Motherly Model of the Nation and Strong Wind Song.” Ma ended his statement by wishing the Shanghai TV Festival a bright future.
