International Film and TV Market Opens with 150 Exhibitors

The International Film and TV Market of the 15th Shanghai TV Festival is held in Shanghai Exhibition Center from 9th to 11th June, 2009. 150 TV stations, producers and distributors from all over are in attendance, and some 500 other domestic and overseas professional buyers are invited to join in as well. According to a spokesperson from the market\'s organizing committee, the event is always popular with international exhibitors, who will together make up 40% of the event\'s participants. This year, pitches for animated film and TV projects are included for the first time, and the focus is to find investment and financing for upstart filmmakers and encourage the development of the Chinese animation industry.

Well-known corporations like SMG, CCTV, East-Shanghai, Huayi, Hairun Film and TV Group, Pony Benteng , Zhejing Huace Group and Beijing TV Art Centre are  attending the market, as always, with their new works in hand.  However, some newly established companies, like Shanghai Yuyang Culture and Beijing Story Studio, established by 10 famous Chinese playwrights, are coming as well.  And of course, there\'s the delegation from Taiwan.

There are also more European and American exhibitors at the fair than there were last year, with big names such as such as Walt Disney, Columbia International, Voice of Germany, ITN, French Press Agency all expected to show. Asian media entities are well represented as well. NHK, TBS and TV Tokyo are all coming, and Korean channels such as KBS, MBC and SBS are there for the seventh year in the row.

When the first animated projects were pitched to investors at the Shanghai TV Festival last year, there was great interest both at home and abroad. One such project, financially bolstered by the organizing committee of the TV festival, drew attention from over 200 buyers at the Juvenile Market of Cannes TV Festival.

These pitches for animated works are brought to the market for the first time this year. Several promising Chinese companies have been actively engaged in the show, hoping to showcase their 120 best projects. During the TV festival, the participants are offered training and coaching by international masters in this field, and the seeds for prospective partnerships are planted. With any luck, all this makes it much easier for prospective Chinese companies to get their projects off the ground, better connecting them to the international market by making financing more easily available and the opportunities for international exposure more accessible.
