Innovating festival mechanism to meet needs of the public-26th STVF to kick off tomorrow

As the two main sections of the 2020 Shanghai International Film & TV Festival, the 23rd Shanghai International Film Festival has come smoothly to a safe and successful end today and the 26th Shanghai TV Festival (STVF) will open tomorrow. This year’s STVF is hosted by the National Radio and Television Administration, China Media Group and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. From August 3 to 7, the festival will provide the people with a feast of rich TV programs, cheer China’s film and television industry up after the test of the COVID-19 pandemic and boost its confidence to start anew.

Despite the many difficulties due to the pandemic during its preparatory period, the 26th STVF, guided and supported by the national competent authorities and superior leadership, has progressed systematically, and with a new look, new pattern, and new coordinates, has shown that it remains unchanged in its efforts to promote the development of Shanghai into an international film and television production center and the “Shanghai Culture” brand, in its drive to try its best to respond to the people’s needs and love for TV culture, and in its confidence and action in promoting the innovation and transformation of the TV industry, especially in the post-COVID-19 era.

The first international television and cultural event held in China when COVID-19 prevention and control has become part of everyday life, this year\'s STVF remains true to its principles of being professional, international, and accessible. By innovating its mechanism, improving its services, the festival continues to keep up with the people and the times with the theme of "Break Through the Boundaries"[M1] . It has managed to break through one of the boundaries by including for the first time the “TV series premiered on major video websites" in the Magnolia Awards competition, which is a response to the overall developments and needs of China’s TV series industry, and reflects its mission and commitment to promote the prosperity of socialist TV art in the new era.

For on-site activities of this year’s STVF, strict COVID-19 prevention and control measures will be put in place. For the first time, the Magnolia Awards selection was conducted by the Chinese judges in Shanghai and the international judges online. The famous director Zheng Xiaolong chairs the jury of the TV Series category. The shortlist, which brings together the best works from the Chinese and foreign TV industries over the past year, has caused a stir among the audience upon its release. On the evening of August 7, the award winners will be announced at the Magnolia Awards Ceremony, which will be broadcast on Dragon TV,
DOCUTV
[VJ2]  and some video platforms. After years of development, the Magnolia Award has become an indicator for the TV industry, and STVF has also become an important cultural event that the public are interested in and talk about.

STVF adheres to the "people first" orientation to contribute to “a city of the people, by the people, and for the people”. This year the festival has collected more than 800 entries from 48 countries and regions. As an important program, the International TV Showcase will actively provide services accessible to citizens. Nearly 35 outstanding Chinese and foreign TV programs will be shown on Shanghai TV’s four channels: City TV, East Movie Channel, DOCUTV, and Toonmax TV[M3] , including hit TV series such as WORLD ON FIRE and THE GOOD DOCTOR – SEASON 2; for the first time, 24 outstanding Chinese and foreign TV series will be shown outdoors in the five business districts in Songjiang District, Jing\'an District, and Pudong New Area, allowing citizens to watch the latest Chinese TV series and hit TV series from all over the world.

This year\'s STVF through a variety of innovative ways has enabled online and offline integration and transformation. The TV Market for the first time was held in conjunction with the 23rd Shanghai International Film Festival\'s SIFF Market. The launch of the International Film and TV Online Market has aroused great response from film and television institutions at home and abroad, and the total number of exhibitors exceeded that of previous years. It integrates cloud-based exhibitions, cloud-based negotiations, cloud-based activities and cloud-based services. In addition to the routine display of various film and television institutions, five themed exhibition areas have been established. Among them, the "Poverty Alleviation for a Well-off Society" Key Programs Exhibition exhibits TV series included in the National Radio and Television Administration’s Key Programs 2018-2022, presenting the great achievements of China in alleviating poverty and building a well-off society in an all-round way; the "Chinese Theater Themed Exhibition" exhibits the major programs shown overseas and introductions of contracted media outlets and other exhibition information; The "Yangtze River Delta Film and Shooting Base Alliance Exhibition" brings together information on 17 distinctive filming bases including Dongyang Hengdian World Studios, Xiangshan Film and Television Town, and Wuxi Studios. There are also the "Belt and Road" Film Festival Alliance Exhibition, "Film and Television Post-production Exhibition" [a4] and so on.
