Jury Chairman

Gao Xixi   Director(China)

Gao Xixi is a Chinese director who graduated from the Directing Department of Beijing Film Academy. He joined the army in 1993 and was a deputy director of the Television Arts Center of the PLA Air Force and the director of Television Arts Center under the political department of the PLA Air Force. He is now a member of the presidium of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and Vice Chairman of the Cultural Industry Foundation of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles. In 2016, he served as a jury member of the 69th Cannes International Film Festival. In the same year, on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, he left his handprints and footprints and signed his name, becoming the second Chinese mainland director to leave prints in Hollywood. His representative works include History of the Sky, Happiness as Flowers, Three Kingdoms, Xiao Ao Cang Qiaong, Shanghai Bund, and Tianmimi, etc. Xiao Ao Cang Qiaong won the first prize of TV series of the 3rd National Television Industry Award. History of the Sky won the first prize of the 25th Flying Apsaras Award for long-form TV series and Excellent Long-form TV Series of the 23rd Golden Eagle Award. He won the Best Director Award at the 4th Macau International TV Festival with the costume drama Legend of Chu and Han and was three times nominated the Best Director of the Magnolia Awards of the Shanghai TV Festival with Three Kingdoms, Shanghai Bund and Zhi Zui Jin Mi. In 2011, Three Kingdoms won the silver award of the Magnolia Awards for Chinese TV drama at the 17th Shanghai TV Festival.

Chen Tong   Writer, Scenarist 

Chen Tong is a scenarist and writer who graduated from Beijing Normal University. In 2006, she co-worked with Wang Hailing on the script of the TV drama New Age of Marriage and started her screenwriting career. She has written for many popular TV series, including New Age of Marriage, Never Say Goodbye, You Are My Lover, One Servant of Two Masters, Divorce Lawyers and so on. Chen was awarded the Top Ten TV Series Screenwriters of the 11th China Television Production Industry Award. In 2015, she was nominated the Best Screenwriter of the Magnolia Awards at the 21st Shanghai TV Festival for the urban TV drama One Servant of Two Masters. In the same year, Divorce Lawyers was also nominated for the Best TV Series and the Best Actress of the Magnolia Awards at the 21st Shanghai TV Festival.

Huang Zhizhong   Actor

Huang Zhizhong is a national A-class actor of mainland China. He graduated from the Central Academy of Drama and is well known to the audience for playing Hai Rui in the TV series The Great Ming Dynasty in 1566. His representative TV drama works include The Great Ming Dynasty in 1566, The Road We Have Taken, Jia Chang Cai, China Expeditionary Force, Shanghai Dawn and New Drawing Swords, etc. The role of Yang Liren in The Road We Have Taken won for him the Outstanding Actor of the 28th Flying Apsaras Award and the Best Actor of the Magnolia Awards at the 16th Shanghai TV Festival.

Ma Yili  Actress

Ma Yili is an actress of mainland China who graduated from Shanghai Theatre Academy. She came to the fore by acting in the TV drama Princess Pearl III, and then got wide attention for her role in the TV series Struggle. In 2008, she won the Best Actress Award at the 9th Changchun Film Festival for the film Jiang Bei Hao Ren. In 2015, the TV series Swan Dive for Love  starring her won the Top Ten Influential TV Dramas at the year’s Domestic TV Series Ceremony. In 2017, she was nominated the Best Actress of the Magnolia Awards of the 23rd Shanghai TV Festival for her performance in Chinese Style Relationship. In 2018, she won the Best Actress of the Magnolia Awards of the 24th Shanghai TV Festival for the TV series The First Half of My Life. 

Zhang Yongxin  Director

Zhang Yongxin, graduated from the Directing Department of the Central Academy of Drama, is now an adjunct professor and a master tutor of Qufu Normal University. He directed many excellent rural themed dramas and urban dramas that focus on people\'s livelihood. His representative works include The Advisors Alliance, Housing, Ma Xiangyang’s Countryside Journey, Growling Tiger, Roaring Dragon and Classmates. The rural themed TV drama Ma Xiangyang’s Countryside Journey was selected as “the national audience’s favorite TV series” at the 17th Tripod Award and nominated the Best TV Series of the Magnolia Awards of the 21st Shanghai TV Festival. The Advisors Alliance directed in 2016 by him won a number of domestic film and television awards, including the Best Supporting Actor and the Best Art of the Magnolia Awards at the 24th Shanghai TV Festival. With this play, Zhang was also nominated the Best Director of the same year’s Magnolia Awards and Excellent Director of the 31st Flying Apsaras Award. In 2018, he was specially invited by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences as a jury member of the semi-finals of the 46th International Emmy Award, participating in the selection work in Shanghai.

Foreign Drama Unit

Zack Stentz   Screenwriter, Producer(USA)

Zack Stentz is a famous American writer and producer of film and television, and he also teaches screenwriting in the United States and China. He has co-written the films X-men: First Class, Thor, Agent Cody Banks, Power Rangers as well as many other screenplays. On the television side, Stentz has written and produced over a hundred hours of television, including The Flash Season III, Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles, Fringe, the Twilight Zone and several other shows.  Stentz also created and developed the forthcoming animated show Jurassic World: Chaos Theory for DreamWorks, Universal and Netflix. He has been working on the script of Booster Gold for the DC film universe since last year and is currently developing shows for Warner Bros and Apple Television.

Leonel Vieira   Director, Producer(Portugal)

Leonel Vieira is one of the most successful Portuguese directors and producers with international fame. He founded and operated the production company Stopline, partnered with international production companies and created many excellent TV movies and mini-series, including Um Tiro No Escuro, Tempo Final, and La Vida Inesperada. His debut film A Sombra Dos Abutres was once selected for more than 50 international festivals, winning numerous awards and nominations. He produced and directed the TV series Conexao, which was nominated at the FIPA d’OR in 2010 for best TV series. In 2008, Leonel Vieira was selected as “Producer on the Move” for the Cannes International Film Festival. In 2015, he was considered Personality of the Year in the Arts by SIC’s (one of the main Portuguese channels) commentator Marques Mendes. And he became Forbes magazine’s cover in January 2016.

Mark Edwards   Producer for French TV station ARTE(USA)

Mark Edwards is an independent producer with 20 years of experience in the documentary world. He began his career in New York on a 10-part PBS/BBC series about the history of American Cinema. Starting in 1998, he began specializing in international co-productions and has produced documentaries about history, film and culture for most of the major broadcasters in Europe and North America. Mark Edwards also has extensive working experience in Eastern Europe and has produced several films for Steven Spielberg\'s Shoah Foundation. His productions have been featured in festivals such as Cannes, Lisbon, Turin, Jerusalem and Nyon. 

In July 2012, Mark Edwards joined ARTE as a commissioning editor for documentaries. His commissions include films for the History, Current Affairs, Investigation and Geopolitics strands. His department co-produces 90 creative documentaries per year and buys about ten. Arte (Association Relative à la Télévision Européenne) is a Franco-German TV network that promotes programming in the areas of culture and the arts. As US citizen, he graduated with highest honours from Yale University in 1992 with a degree in English literature and went on to attend film school at NYU. He currently lives in Paris with his family.

Fu Hongxing   Director, Film Professor(China)

Fu Hongxing is one of the famous film directors in China. He is a professor and master supervisor. From July 1985 to July 2006, he served in the China Central Newsreel Documentary Studio (CCNDS) as editor, vice-chief editor and vice manager. In July 2006, he was appointed by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television as Acting President of China Film Archive (CFA) and Acting Director of China Film Art Research Center (CFARC). Fu Hongxing has 21 years’ experience in writing and directing and administration. He has produced over 100 pieces of film and TV works, many of which were awarded state-level prizes in China. Director\'s representative: Mr. Deng Goes to Washington, Zhou Enlai’s Diplomatic Experience, etc.

Ryota Kotani   Director, Producer (Japan)

Ryota Kotani is an Executive Producer and Director at NHK, Japan where he has worked for almost 20 years after joining the company in 1986 as director of documentaries and news operations. During this period, he has directed many documentaries including Urgent Report After Death of Rajiv Gandhi (1991) and the live message show Symphony for the Earth-satellite Live with Seiji Ozawa and World Musicians (1995), European Picnic Plan Breaking Against Iron Curtain (1993), and has won an award at HBF. He has been instrumental for co-production of insightful documentaries like Indian Short Film Series (2007&08), Queen and I (2008). He commissioned films –Chronicle of Amnesiac by Anirban Datta and The No-man’s Island by Saurav Sarangi (2012), Spiral Stairs by Ji Tang and Japan: Love & Hate by Sean McAlister (2009).

Max Howard    Producer, Animation Consultant (USA)

Max Howard created and ran studios for Disney in London, Paris, Orlando and Los Angeles, working on some of Disney’s most memorable films including Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King. As President of Warner Bros. Feature Animation, he oversaw such hit movies as The Iron Giant and Space Jam.  At DreamWorks, he was co-executive producer for Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron. 

Max is currently an executive producer on 100% Wolf, an animated feature film being produced in Australia by Flying Bark Animation Productions. Max was an executive producer on the Christmas movie, Saving Santa, and recently completed a series of animated feature films for Exodus Film Group:  Igor, The Hero of Color City and Bunyan and Babe.

Max is a sought-after animation consultant; and a feature animation guest speaker and judges at colleges/universities, and animation festivals around the world including Annecy International Animated Film Festival, Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film, etc. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Shuzo John Shiota  Executive Producer (Japan)

Shuzo John Shiota graduated from Sophia University. After joining Nippon Steel Corporation in 1991, Shuzo then transferred to participating in the launch of Dream Pictures Studio in 1997. He moved to Polygon Pictures two years later and in 2003 assumed the position of President and CEO. The company has since enjoyed exponential growth as the premier digital animation studio in Asia, winning many accolades including multiple Emmy Awards with popular works such as Knights of Sidonia, Ajin, and Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters.

In 2008, he was selected as one of the "25 Toon Titans of Asia" by popular industry publication Animation Magazine. He is also the recipient of the Wired Audi Innovation Award 2016. Shuzo has also juried on many major Japanese and international film festivals, including Prix Ars Electronica, SIGGRAPH, Annecy, and Digicon6.

Liu Kuo   Animation Director (China)

Liu Kuo has been teaching in Beijing Film Academy till now after graduation. From 2004 to 2006, he was the chief director of Century Sonny, 52-episode 3D animation series which have won Best Animation Award at the 23rd Golden Eagle TV Art Festival and Merit for Outstanding TV Animation at the 20th Starlight Award in China. In 2006, he directed the animated feature Shan Hai Jing.

Since 2010, Liu Kuo has been the chief director and artistic director of Xia Lan, 208-episode 3D animation series. Xia Lan has won many awards including Outstanding Animation Award of TBS TV Festival in Japan in 2011 and Outstanding Animation Award of SARFT (The State Administration of Radio Film and Television) in 2012. From 2013 to 2017, he was the chief director, artistic director and executive producer of a series of works such as Hua Jianghu: Bu Liang Ren and Hua Jianghu: Xia Lan. In 2018, he worked as the chief director of The Wind Guardians. Except from animation creation, he has written over ten books on animation and published dozens of papers on national magazines.
