At the 2018 Working Conference of National Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, it has been pointed out that television stations at all levels shall vigorously boost their strength in communicating, guiding and influencing, as well as enhance their credibility. To this end, they shall build emotional connections and evoke ideological resonance with the public with specially selected methods and means of storytelling. In the new era, how can television stations better put the reality in spotlight, improve their guiding power and programming quality, publicize new ideas, and record the new era? This forum will invite the directors of major TV stations to share their ideas about how to capture contemporary spirits, meet audiences’ needs, focus on the ever-changing society, and lead the contemporary trend in the process of producing various programs connected with news, variety shows, public welfare, culture, science and technology, arts and more; and further on, how to regard writing and recording the great practices of the people and the advancing requirements of the age as due diligence, strengthen the creation with regard to realistic themes, and introduce the splendid contemporary stories of China to the world.

The rapid development of China’s cultural industry provides favorable environment and resources for documentaries’ diversified expression and industrialization. The rise of digital platforms and media’s cross-border integration are changing comprehensively the production, distribution and reception of documentaries with more and more documentaries achieving commercial success. Documentary audiences are expanding from traditional “three highs” (high income, high cultural level and high age) to younger groups, and documentaries have changed from the “side dish” to the “main dish”. From the producer to the broadcasting platforms, how should documentary filmmakers deal with this industry’s new norms and make breakthroughs in production, distribution and profitability? How does a batch of hot documentaries with high praise and high popularity since last year reflect the ethos of the society and attract young audiences while recording reality? What views and experience do foreign documentary peers have on the new trends in the development of Chinese and foreign documentaries? This forum will invite documentary filmmakers and producers from domestic and abroad to discuss the new documentary ecologies.

Thanks to the fully tapped originality of major TV Channels and OTT platforms, a batch of outstanding shows with deep rooted Chinese culture have won both great ratings and great reputation, stirring up a wave of promoting Chinese culture.
Inspired by the rich traditional Chinese culture, how can we shape Chinese original shows into something with backbone, morality and delight? How to establish a cluster of original shows of small budget, big values and positive vibes? How to introduce these shows to the world to spread our culture and present cultural soft power?

In recent years, outstanding Chinese TV dramas such as NIRVANA IN FIRE, LIFE REVELATION and FEATHER FLIES TO THE SKY have been broadcasted overseas and created positive social effects and sales performance. These works have either dig into the long and profound Chinese history and culture, or reflected contemporary Chinese people’s colorful live, jointly presenting to the world a dynamic China.
Chinese TV dramas have a good prospect for huge market potential regarding overseas broadcasting. International perspectives and the establishment of world-class quality standards on the basis of maintaining Chinese culture are the means to further bring Chinese dramas abroad. Decision makers from the Chinese TV industry are expanding the themes and types of exported TV dramas, setting up various marketing strategies for different countries and regions, and actively participating in international exchanges and cooperation.
