On the morning of June 24, the opening ceremony of the 29th Shanghai Television Festival was held in the central hall of the Shanghai Exhibition Center. Zhao Jiaming, Member of the Standing Committee and Director of the Publicity Department of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, Jiang Wenbo, Member of Editorial Board of China Media Group, Gao Changli, Director of the Television Drama Department of the National Radio and Television Administration, Yu Ying, Director of the Science and Technology Department of National Radio and Television Administration, Shang Yuying, Deputy Secretary-General of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, Shi Zhiyan, Deputy Inspector of the International Cooperation Department of the National Radio and Television Administration, Daniel Edmundo Ortega, Head of the Council for Communications and Civil Affairs of the Republic of Nicaragua, and Mohd Faz, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Communications of Malaysia, attended the opening ceremony. Zhao Jiaming announced the opening of this year's television festival.
From June 24 to June 28, hosted by the National Radio and Television Administration, China Media Group, and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, and organized by Shanghai Municipal Administration of Radio and Television and Shanghai Media Group, with co-organization by the Administration Committee of Lin-gang Special Area of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, and special support from Shanghai Lingang Special Area Investment Holding (Group) Co., Ltd., this year’s STVF will include a series of activities such as Magnolia Awards for International TV Programs, STVFORUM, STVF MARKET, International TV Showcase, etc. The Magnolia Awards Ceremony will be held on the evening of June 28 at the Lingang Performing Arts Center. These diverse activities will provide a platform for exchange among television professionals from around the world, empower the high-quality development of the television industry, and create a grand cultural festival for citizens, tourists, and fans.
The beauty of harmony and mutual appreciation shine through. During the opening ceremony, a compilation of “Excellent Cases of International Cooperation and Communication” was presented. Jointly produced Chinese-English animated films such as SUPERTATO and LOVE MONSTER, Sino-American co-produced documentary SINO-US FRIENDSHIP: GUARDIANS OF NATIONAL TREASURES, Sino-French co-produced documentary THE STORY OF ZHEN AND BERENICE and other co-productions shone together. The successful overseas export of the excellent music variety show Chinese Idol-OUR SONG in its original format has topped the prime-time viewing charts in Spain since its Spanish premiere. The Vietnamese version is also ready for production, pioneering the practices of “going global” of Chinese original programming. Global “Chinese TV Theatre” in more than 70 countries, including the “Magnolia Time” in Russia, the “Bawrsak Theatre” in Kazakhstan, and the “Shining Theater” in Thailand, have become bridges for sharing Chinese stories with the world. Foreign historical and biographical dramas such as THE ADVENTURES OF YOUNG VOLTAIRE from France, SHAKESPEARE: RISE OF A GENIUS from the UK, and WINNING TIME: THE RISE OF THE LAKERS DYNASTY from the United States have also been introduced to China, enhancing the exchange and mutual learning of human civilization.
This year, the number of countries and regions participating in the Magnolia Awards has increased from 49 to 57, covering all five continents. The international lineup of the Magnolia Awards Jury Panel is powerful, with six foreign jurors from the UK, France, India, the Netherlands, and Japan joining Chinese jury members to select high-quality works for the industry and the audience, playing a leading role in the industry. At the opening ceremony, three Jury Presidents on behalf of the 15 jurors commented on the highly anticipated nominated works, expressing their attitudes.
Yan Jiangang, Jury President of the TV Drama (China), said that the ten Chinese and ten foreign TV dramas selected this year have brought him and the jury members great surprises and touch, whether in terms of era, breakthrough, or innovation. “TV dramas have shortened the distance between us and the world, expanded our understanding of cultural integration, and showcased the unique charm of TV dramas through their colorful, profound, and mysterious stories.”
The Jury President of the documentary category, Indian director and producer Vikram Channa, expressed his admiration for the ten nominated documentaries this year for their unique perspectives and profound depth, stating that they “lead us to insights that transcend dimensions, illuminating our understanding and perception of the world, and all of them have captivated us.” The Jury President of the animation category and French animation producer Frédéric Puech, believed that the ten nominated animated films showcased creative and immersive expressions: “They depicted fantastical scenes with bold colors and portrayed the brilliance of human nature with delicate brushstrokes, all within this boundless space, sowing seeds of ‘imagination’.”
