International TV Showcase | Venues for Public Screening of STVF Announced

This afternoon, the mobilization meeting for the 2024 Shanghai International Film and Television Festivals took place, where the screening venues for the 26th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) and for International TV Showcase of the 29th Shanghai Television Festival (STVF) were announced.

Hosted by the National Radio and Television Administration, China Media Group, and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, with co-organization by the Administration Committee of Lin-gang Special Area of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, and special support from Shanghai Lingang Special Area Investment Holding (Group) Co., Ltd., the 29th STVF will be held from June 24 to 28. The Internation TV Showcase and offline public screening programme will continue to create a “television festival right at our doorstep”. By showcasing and screening over 50 works nominated for the Magnolia Awards, the event aims to make art accessible and enrich the city’s cultural education. This year, the number of public screening venues has expanded from 18 to 20, allowing residents in 16 districts to enjoy international and domestic works in local cultural spaces and engage directly with global filmmakers.

Expansion of Offline Public Screening Venues

To uphold the principle of “A City for the People”, and highlight the public welfare aspect of the STVF, Internation TV Showcase will present through television, internet platforms, and offline public screenings world-class works, allowing citizens to appreciate, resonate, and align with the times.

Forty works competing for the Magnolia Awards, including domestic and foreign animations, foreign dramas, and documentaries, will be broadcast during prime time on Shanghai local TV channels. Additionally, ten works nominated for the Magnolia Awards for domestic and foreign animations, foreign dramas, and documentaries will be available on the BesTV online platform. Guided by the National Radio and Television Administration, the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, and the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Radio and Television, the Shanghai International Film & TV Festivals, Co., Ltd., in collaboration with the Shanghai Mass Art Center and the Shanghai Television Artists Association, will coordinate with various professional cultural venues and institutions across the city to host a five-day public screening event during the festival.

Notably, this year’s offline public screening programme has been upgraded and expanded. Last year, popular venues such as the China Art Museum, Power Station of Art and INLET 8, Shanghai Mass Art Center, Shanghai Children’s Library (new venue), Jiading Library, Fengxian Museum, and the Songjiang Poly Yunjian Theater, etc., were highly favored by citizens. This year, the number of public screening venues has increased to 20 to include the Shanghai Grand Theatre, Shanghai Book City, and the theater of Shanghai Library East Branch. These venues aim to broaden the boundaries of “watching television”, allowing citizens to enjoy international and domestic films at their doorstep and enrich their lives with aesthetic education.

Offline public screenings, compared with television and online broadcasts, provide a platform for international masterpieces to be showcased in local cultural spaces, strengthening the cultural value of the venues while fostering direct interaction between audiences, creators, and professionals. To ensure a superior viewing experience, venues such as the China Art Palace, Shanghai Grand Theatre, Shanghai Jiushi Art Museum, Shanghai Book City, and the Shanghai Library East Branch will host ten offline meet-and-greet sessions. Creators from popular works like THE LEGEND HEROES, the final season of the BBC’s INSIDE NO. 9, the documentary PLANET EARTH SEASON 3, and the American series STAR TREK: PICARD SEASON 3 will participate in pre- and post-screening discussions. PLANET EARTH SEASON 3, a BBC Studios production filmed over five years, will have its executive producer Michael Gunton attending the China Art Palace meet-and-greet to unveil the stories behind its breathtaking scenes. Writers and stars of the dark comedy INSIDE NO. 9, Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton, will also appear at the Shanghai Grand Theatre to discuss the creation of this imaginative series.
